The differences between perfume types
When it comes to perfumes, the different types of fragrance are mainly distinguished by the concentration ratio of water, alcohol and fragrance oils. This mixing ratio influences:
- how long a fragrance lasts,
- how intensely it is perceived,
- and how top, heart and base notes unfold on the skin & in the air.
Quick comparison of fragrance concentrations
| Category | Fragrance oil content* | Intensity | Perceived longevity | Typical character |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Extrait de Parfum | ≥ 20% (for L’ATELIERO usually > 25%) | very high | very long | rich, harmonious, high-quality |
| Eau de Parfum | ~ 14% (up to approx. 17% possible) | high | medium to long | balanced, suitable for everyday wear |
| Eau de Toilette | up to ~ 10% | medium | shorter | fresh focus on top notes |
| Eau de Cologne | up to ~ 5% | light | very short | sparkling citrus, refreshing |
*Guide values; formulas may vary depending on the brand.
Extrait de Parfum
Extrait de Parfum and Essence de Parfum stand for the highest commonly used fragrance concentration on the market (from approx. 20% fragrance oil). They are particularly intense and long-lasting with a dense, harmonious development. At L’ATELIERO we work with > 25% high-quality perfume oil – a level typically found in niche and luxury brands.
Eau de Parfum
Eau de Parfum is generally less concentrated than Extrait. The proportion is usually around 14%, sometimes up to 17%. The effect is noticeably intense, with a medium to long perception time – common among established (sometimes high-priced) brands.
Eau de Toilette
Eau de Toilette is lighter (up to ~10% fragrance oil) and emphasizes the top notes. Immediately after application, it creates a fresh “wow” effect that, however, fades more quickly. Often the more budget-friendly alternative to EdP/Extrait.
Eau de Cologne
Eau de Cologne focuses on bright citrus/orange accords, is extremely fresh and lasts only briefly (up to ~5% fragrance oil). Ideal as a refreshing intermezzo in between.
Why L’ATELIERO fragrances are Extrait de Parfum
When developing fragrances based on specific lifestyles, our focus was: how intensely and for how long should a fragrance fascinate? As passionate fragrance lovers, we wanted creations that you consciously notice several times a day – longer than most EdC/EdT/EdP can offer. That’s why we opted for Extrait de Parfum with high perfume oil concentrations, which suit our compositions best.
The result: long-lasting, radiant, vibrant and intense signatures. Try it for yourself – for example in the Discovery Set, directly in the men’s fragrance collection or in the women’s fragrance collection.
